Africa Connect Update

Ahhhh Africa Connect was fantastic!! Im so happy this was my first attempt at live vending because it was uber cushy. My set up was far… eons… No, two lifetimes away from being picture perfect, but it worked! Nothing a few posters, a Kente tablecloth, and a mega-watt smile couldn’t fix. Thank God for sisters and sister-friends. They totally saved me from looking a fool at this event.

People were receptive, lots of questions, a few custom orders… I think I came out okay 🙂

#1 Lessons Learned: Over-preparation is a must. Start earlier and make more product. Oh, and a better display!

Africa Connect 2011!

Africa Connect - Edmonton

 

So, my first marketplace is tomorrow!  It’s called Africa Connect!  It’s a one-time event that my city is putting on in recognition of the United Nations naming 2011 as the International Year for People of African Descent.

 

Was this event tailormade for Orese, or what??  It’s being promoted as African Marketplace (check!), it’s a one-day event (check!) it’s Free.99 to be a vendor (CHECK!), they provide a table and booth for me (check!!).  I mean, really… this is embarassingly fantastic. 

 

Needless to say, I’m supa dupa excited!   I’m really interested in seeing how people react  to my work in person.  I’m preparing myself for everything from the side-eyes to the smiles!   Either way, it should be fun.  And it’s a great way to get my feet wet with vending.

 

I still have a ton of things to accomplish today, so just wanted to pop in and update you!!  I’m really hoping I do well tomorrow, so send me all your good vibes and prayers, okay? 🙂

Who’s time warp is this? Surely my own. I can’t believe I last posted here on May 16! Inexcusable!

I won’t give you the lame “I’ve been sooooo busy” excuse. Instead, I’ll say… I’ve been helping mankind, one earring at a time. 🙂

Okay, time to catch you all up.

Me, Myself, & Ikea

I’m trying to make my work space mo’ betta (read: less hazardous, more organized), so I bought a table from Ikea last week. It was cheap ($69 for a desk + storage! How could I pass it up?), clean, and simple: all the good things we expect from Ikea. By the looks of it, this desk should have been a breeze to put together:

No! Such! Thing! My first clue, should have been when the 287 pound box nearly fell on my head inside Ikea, then one more time while driving it home. It took 3 people to get it into my place. O_O (This is where *most* people would have clued in that they might be in over their head–not me.)

Anyway, I was so excited to finally have a table, and start working like a human being! I couldn’t wait to get started. So, I opened the box, unpacked all the pieces, and looked for the thin, easy-breezy, waif-like instructional leaflet…. that actually turned out to be a 3 0 P A G E short story! Say wha?! No, thank you. So disappointing! I even had my toolkit ready and urrythang. :-\

Clearly the booklet put me off right away. So, while I was coming up with an action plan on how to tackle this project, it sat like this against my wall for a few hours (1 week), staring at me:

I finally had a heart to heart with the table, and decided it was okay to start putting it together. Now that it’s all said and done, and I have to say, it wasn’t even that bad! A few hiccups here and there, but I survived. (I’ll spare you the gory details of me tightening the wrong screws in, then digging them back out after I couldn’t un-tighten them. Yeah…..)

Here’s the final result:

I’m pretty happy with it. It has everything I need, and my workspace won’t look like a sty anymore! It’s not the sexiest table, but did you read when I said it was $69? Yes. We like that.

I’m going going back back to Maui Maui!

And By “back back,” of course I mean I’ve never… been… there…. Moving along!

Yeeeeeeeeesssssss… I’m going to Hawaii!  I’m supa-dupa excited!   In fact, I am going to start my packing today, even though I’m leaving in a few days.  Packing early is completely unheard of in my world.  Usually, I start packing at 10pm the night before then end up packing all night, sleeping for 6 minutes, then rushing off to the airport.  Le sigh… I never learn.  Soooooo this time around, I’m going to prepare for this trip like an adult: pack early, pack light, & breeze through security.

I’ve been trying to get all my Orese orders in… order… before I leave.  I won’t be closing the shop up, but I will make a note that all orders made between May 16 – 26 will start shipping on May 27. We’ll see how that goes.

In the meantime… I CAN’T WAITTTTTT!!!! 😀 *does a Hula jig*
